The Appeal of Salt and Pepper Tofu
Salt and pepper tofu is a classic Chinese dish that has gained popularity worldwide for its flavourful simplicity. Traditionally deep-fried, tofu cubes are tossed in a mixture of salt, pepper, garlic, and chili, creating a savoury and slightly spicy coating that’s incredibly addictive. The dish is loved for its combination of textures—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with its balanced seasoning, It’s a dish that proves tofu can be just as satisfying as any meat-based alternative, making it a hit among both vegetarians and meat lovers.
Health Benefits of Air-Fried Salt and Pepper Tofu
Tofu is an excellent source of plant-based protein and contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. It is also rich in calcium, iron, and other vital nutrients. By air frying instead of deep frying, this recipe significantly reduces the amount of oil and calories, making it a heart-healthy option. The use of fresh chili, garlic, and bell peppers adds antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits to the dish, contributing to your overall wellness.
Why Even Meat Eaters Will Love This Dish
Although I am no longer vegetarian, I often find myself choosing to eat air-fried salt and pepper tofu because of its amazing flavour and texture. The crispy exterior, combined with the aromatic spices and fresh vegetables, creates a dish that’s just as satisfying as any meat-based option. It’s a great way to incorporate more plant-based meals into your diet without feeling like you’re missing out on anything.
Why You Should Drain and Press Tofu
Draining and pressing tofu is a crucial step when preparing any fried tofu dish, especially for air frying. Tofu contains a lot of water, and if not properly drained, it can result in a soggy texture rather than the desired crispy exterior. Pressing the tofu removes excess moisture, allowing it to absorb the seasoning better and crisp up nicely in the air fryer. To drain tofu, simply wrap it in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels, place a heavy object (like a skillet or a stack of books) on top, and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. This step makes all the difference in achieving that perfect, golden-brown crunch. If you plan on using Tofu regularly I would buy a specific tofu press but it is not necessary.
