My culinary journey into Italian cuisine took a memorable turn during a trip to Sorrento with my girlfriend. Amidst the breath taking views of the coast and the charming streets of this picturesque town we were walking. By chance we stumbled upon a quaint trattoria that served the most exquisite dishes including Gnocchi alla Sorrentina meaning Sorrento style.
This traditional dish, with its soft, pillowy gnocchi smothered in a rich tomato sauce and melted mozzarella, immediately captured our hearts and taste buds. Inspired by that unforgettable meal, I’ve recreated this classic Italian comfort food at home, so you too can enjoy the taste of Sorrento, no matter where you are.

The History of Gnocchi alla Sorrentina
Gnocchi alla Sorrentina is a cherished Italian dish that originates from the picturesque town of Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. This classic recipe features soft potato gnocchi baked in a rich tomato sauce, topped with melted mozzarella cheese. The dish reflects the simplicity of Italian home cooking, where local, fresh ingredients are used to create tasty comforting meals.
Gnocchi, meaning “knots” in Italian, has roots in ancient Roman cuisine but evolved into its current form in the region. The addition of tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, which became popular in the 19th century with the introduction of tomatoes and cheese into Italian cuisine, highlights the region’s love for fresh, high-quality produce.
This quaint pasta dish embodies the essence of Italian gastronomy, blending tradition and taste in a dish that has become a beloved staple in both Italian homes and restaurants around the world.

Directions
- Cook the Gnocchi: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the gnocchi and cook according to package instructions, usually until they float to the surface. Drain and set aside.
- Prepare the Sauce: In a cast iron skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, dried basil, and oregano. Season with salt and black pepper. Simmer the sauce for about 10 minutes or until it has reduced by 1/3rd, allowing the flavours to combine and the sauce to get richer.
- Combine Gnocchi and Sauce: Gently fold the cooked gnocchi into the tomato sauce, ensuring they are well coated.
- Bake the Dish: Top with slices or shredded mozzarella cheese. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 15-20 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown. Be careful as the Skillet will be seriously hot when it comes out the oven.
